This is not the first time I had this issue. I actually bought a HDD off a friend because my old HDD had this EXACT SAME PROBLEM. It's driving me mad what can cause the same problem on the same 2 drives. It's causing application to lock up and sometimes the whole PC as the HDD slows to a crawl.
